Melissa Borom—Statement of Candidacy

Melissa Borom, a graduate of Valparaiso Law School who previously worked in Congressman Pete Visclosky’s office, currently works at a global aviation corporation where she focuses on workforce development; helping bring schools, training programs and businesses together to provide workers with the skills and training they need to compete in a changing 21st century economy. Born in East Chicago, raised in Merrillville, and currently a Gary resident, Borom sits on the Board of Directors for NorthShore Health Centers, which provides vital health care services to those in northwest Indiana who otherwise would not have access to quality health care options.

“As an African American woman growing up in northwest Indiana, it didn’t always feel like every door was open to me, but because of determined parents – a retired East Chicago teacher and a Merrillville school custodian – willing to make every sacrifice to ensure I received a quality education, I had the opportunity to go to law school and even give back to my community by working in the office of Congressman Pete Visclosky. I’m running for Congress because everyone deserves the opportunity to succeed, no matter where they’re from."
